Rental Car Center

  • Secure rental car "shopping mall"
  • Will eliminate the rental car and rental car shuttle traffic at MIA
  • Airport curbside congestion will be eliminated by 30%

The Rental Car Center (RCC) is the first major structure of the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC) Program under construction with an opening date of spring 2010. It is designed and is being built by the Florida Department of Transportation under the purview of Earth Tech's MIC consultant management team, with HNTB providing construction engineering and inspection services and Turner Construction as contractor. Upon completion, the RCC will be operated and maintained by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department.

Located between Le Jeune Road and the future Miami Central Station, its area is bounded by NW 25th Street on the north, NW 38th Court on the east, NW 21st Street on the south and Le Jeune Road on the west.

All current rental car companies operating inside Miami International Airport (MIA) and many located near the airport will co-locate into the RCC's four level building. Each of its 4 levels is approximately 20 acres in size; the first three floors dedicated to storage and maintenance operations and the fourth level will accommodate a spacious customer service lobby where vehicle renters may enter and choose their best option among rental car company offers - a virtual rental car shopping mall.

The RCC has many notable features such as its distinctive architecture which will serve as a gateway for South Florida's visitors. It also features the first multilevel fueling system in the United States. This innovative system required careful consideration of technical and life safety challenges, and will permit a more efficient and economical car turnaround cycle for rental car companies. At full build out, the RCC will include:

  • 3.4 million square feet
  • Spacious customer service facilities for rental car transactions
  • Space available for up to 20 rental car companies
  • 6,500 car capacity
  • Ready/Return car areas
  • Fleet Storage/Staging areas
  • Quick Turnaround area for washing and refueling
    • 120 Fuel positions
    • 42 Wash bays
Once the rental car companies take residence and the RCC opens to the traveling public, a consolidated shuttle service will run to-and-from the terminals at MIA, transporting South Florida visitors renting vehicles to the RCC. The shuttle service will operate for approximately 2 years until the MIA Mover, an automated peoplemover, begins service between MIA and the RCC. Once the MIA Mover is in service, rental car shuttles and rental cars will disappear from the airport's arrival deck. It is estimated that 30% of current traffic will be eliminated off of the roadways in and around the terminals.
